The Big Picture: This week, the media focused heavily on expected housing market trends for 2023. Other notable stories covered a new homelessness plan from the White House as well as continued calls for housing policy action around the country.

What We're Advocating

Capitol Hill: Congress is finalizing the appropriations package to fund the government in 2023. Currently, the legislation looks like a proverbial mixed bag for the industry. But in a huge win for NAA and our industry partners, $85 million has been tentatively secured to fund a grant program based on Sen. Schatz’s bipartisan ‘Yes In My Backyard’ (YIMBY) legislation. NAA will provide further analysis and impacts on the industry once the bill is passed. 

The White House: NAA, alongside a wide coalition of rental housing advocacy organizations, continues to speak directly to White House leaders about the impacts of imposing federal landlord and tenant protections. Last week, NAA led the coalition in sending a letter to key administration officials, offering industry perspective and advocating for sustainable solutions that address the root of affordability issues: a lack of housing supply. Read the letter.

What We're Saying
Rental Market: “Pursuing sustainable and responsible solutions to address our nation’s housing affordability crisis will remain a steadfast priority in the new year. Our nation’s affordability challenges stem from an alarming supply/demand imbalance, and to properly address this we must build 4.3 million new apartments by 2035,” said NAA President & CEO Bob Pinnegar in a Forbes article previewing expected housing trends for the new year.

White House Homelessness Plan: “President Biden set up a lofty goal post for tackling homelessness by a quarter over the next two years. That's according to an announcement from the White House this week, in which the Biden administration outlined its plan to build on homelessness-reducing initiatives started during the pandemic.” (Business Insider)
